October has been a busy month. In addition to our 10 x 10 evening we co presented a night with the ASE about the editing of the feature documentary THE TRIANGLE WARS with Director /Editor Rosie Jones.

We also presented a few sessions at the Generation Next Documentary Conference held at Cinema Nova by Open Channel. It was a great event with many attendees and interesting panels. Look forward to the next one.

Darcy was back with another doco exploring the creative space world.

'Caravan' is a twenty five year artist space which has produced some
key sculptors. The space is continually under review and teeters on
extinction.

Linus has been in Melbourne for a while studying film, and not knowing many people, decided to make a film about the black swans around Albert Park Lake.

A Nature documentary about a family of Black Swans, using only music and observational footage to evoke Joy, unity, fear and a family's love; telling their family tale

Our first animated doco - Lurujarri Dreaming -was then screened by Bernadette.

A 15 min long animated documentary tracing the recent history of the Goolarabooloo people of North-Western WA, their connection to country, and their efforts at reconciliation through the annual Lurujarri Heritage Trail, an opportunity for people to walk with the Goolarabooloo for 9 days along their Songline. This story is told by multiple narrators, indigenous and non-indigenous, young and old.

This short film explores the reflections of five different people on their adolescent years. It looks at missed opportunities, realisations, regrets, frustrations as well as, with the benefit of hindsight, the advice they would have given themselves, knowing what they know now.

Synopsis - Gary’s been corresponding with a girl he met on a dating website. It’s all been going well but there’s one thing he wants her to know before they take it to the next level.

Photographers starred at October's 10 x 10 with 2 great projects along with 2 video projects and a chat by Channel 31.

Doco3000 regular Rodney Dekker started the evening with Tides of Resilience.

Climate change is impacting communities around the world, particularly in developing countries. Witness these impacts on rural villages in Bangladesh through a multimedia presentation by Rodney Dekker. A longer version of this presentation will be on exhibition at Obscura Gallery 24 October and i'm about to commence work on a documentary radio program for ABC radio national's 360 program who have taken on the project.

Newcomer David Franjic screened his work in progress - Diverse City.

Diverse-City focuses on a diversity of communities living in and around a city (in this case Amsterdam). The aim of the series is to paint a multi-cultural and multi-dimensional portrait of a city through the exploration of a range of different communities. Through doing this I hope to illustrate that a city's identity is shaped and formed through a diverse array of cultural influences. I also look to bring further public understanding to the different communities involved and open conversation on alternative attitudes towards living.

Another newcomer all the way from Shepparton was Serana Hunt with her piece on rural outreach worker Ivan Lister in Larger than Life.

From the age of 16 Ivan Lister has taken time out to make sure his mates and neighbours have been getting on ok through droughts, floods, financial hardship and depression.

Corruption, lies and family ties all appear intricate to the voting
process. This documentary delves into local level politics. Asking

After a month off, 10 x 10 was back again with 3 great project screening.

Charlotte previewed her Mexican based project What lies Between.

The film introduces two ongoing social movements in Mexico, and tries to give account, through these respective movements, for the situation of powerlessness which a large, marginalised minority find themselves in. This situation involves being subject to, on the one hand, lingering elements of authoritarianism (which remain despite one party rule coming to a close in 2000), which crop up in certain parts of Mexico when protests get too loud. Likewise, this section of the population is increasingly finding themselves in the way of the project of neo-liberal reform being pushed by the PRI's successors, the business elite, conservative christian party, the PAN - whose policies conflict with the social agenda pushed for by those experiencing poverty and marginalisation.

Takeshi Konda screened his project about Traditional Healthcare in India.

Traditional Healthcare is an Australian based not-for-profit charitable organization committed to the development of sustainable healthcare facilities for underprivileged communities. You can read more about Traditional Healthcare at their website.

Billy Head introduced us to the world of fundbreaker which he is using to try and complete his short, We are illuminated. You can check out and support Billy's project on the fundbreak website.

Call for Entries – Deadline August 31st

The high point of the Guild’s year is the annual ASE Awards that recognise outstanding achievements in editing across all visual mediums. The Awards are a chance for the industry and the public to be enticed to look once more at those productions whose storytelling is so expertly crafted that they have been nominated for Best Editing Awards.

In 2010 the ASE is calling for entries in the following categories:

Avid Award for Best Editing in a Feature Film
The Lab Award for Best Editing in a Television Drama

Best Editing in Television Non-Drama
Best Editing in a Commercial

GREAT NEWS for MONA!

Doco 3000 were thrilled to hear the following news.

People power gets Mona his dream shop

Poppy Shmith and James Fleming showed their advocacy film Mona at April's Doco 10 x 10, seeking suggestions on how to use the film to fundraise to help a charming man from Battambang, Cambodia, of the same name.

Mona was paralysed by polio as a child and dreams of getting his own shop so he can sell postcards and other items to tourists to support his family. The $500 set up cost is prohibitive in a country where the average wage is $1 per day.

Filmmaker Linette Etheridge kindly volunteered to organise a fundraising morning tea to raise the funds. The response was overwhelming and after seeing the film over scones and tea yesterday, Linette's community donated almost double the target amount. Now we can make Mona's dream happen.

The money will be sent to Mona and managed by Buddhism for Development, a local NGO, who will also assist in helping Mona get the shop up and running. Thank you so much to Linette and also her lovely parents Alice and Fred for all the delicious scones. A big thank you to Linette's generous friends and community.

July's 10 x 10 - Adventurers, Prison and Doco Ethics

Thanks to everyone who came down to July's 10 x 10 last week for the great night. With 59 people, it was one of our biggest nights and huge thanks to everyone for being a part of it.

Jacqui Hocking's project is Top to Top

The TOPtoTOP Global Climate Expedition is the 1st expedition over the
7-Seas to the 7-Summits that will be achieved by human and nature’s power
only; to inspire children for a better future.
The expedition visits schools, performs cleanups and is actively involved
in promoting a healthy environment.

I have been travelling with the expedition on their yacht "PACHAMAMA" on
and off since 2008 - the documentary hopes to introduce the expedition to
the world! Incl. environmental issues/personal stories and to share the
goals of the expedition.

Second up was 2 versions of Natasha Carrington's Revolving Door

Filmed on location at Barwon prison, two young male prisoners describe their experience of punishment and rehabilitation. Their stories explore the day to day goings on of a maximum security prison, uncover their family histories, and views on life outside prison. Through the subtext of voice and gesture other conditions are also exposed.

The style is a mix of artistic narration and documentary interview.

‘Honest Truths: Documentary Filmmakers on Ethical Challenges in Their Work’ is the American survey that I referred to and it can be downloaded from http://www.centerforsocialmedia.org/ethics.

The article on ‘Informed Consent: Must or Myth?’ by Willemien Sanders of Utrecht University in the Netherlands is attached as a word doc. It was originally circulated via the TOF subscribers’ list and unfortunately some of the formatting has gone out of whack but it’s still readable! (if anyone wants to go through and tidy it up they are welcome).

Kate Nash’s University of Tasmania PhD about participants’ experiences of being in documentaries (entitled ‘Beyond the Frame: A Study in Observational Documentary Ethics’) is not yet available online and anyway it’s a hefty read (though very readable). Instead people can read the first of three articles Kate has written, summarising her findings, in Metro Magazine – starting with the current issue No 165 which focusses on Australian doco maker Tom Zubrycki’s ‘Molly and Mobarak’ - and with the other two parts to follow in future issues. Metro can usually be found in libraries or bookshops like Readings.

If anyone has any other topics they'd like to see addressed at 10 x 10, let us know and we'll do our best to line something up.

HRAFF is a not-for-profit incorporated association committed to making human rights accessible, relevant and significant to all Australians. The group was founded in late 2006 by a group of young professionals and university students from areas as diverse as law, film, theatre, art, media, development and financial services.

Human rights film festivals have become significant cultural events in many of the world’s major centres, including London, New York, Paris, Johannesburg, Bangkok and Rio de Janeiro. In 2007, HRAFF launched Australia’s first ever human rights arts and film festival.

HRAFF presents a vibrant, multifaceted festival that combines a diverse array of creative responses to contemporary human rights issues. HRAFF is politically neutral, but intends to provide a platform for discussion, engagement and involvement with the causes and potential solutions to a range of human rights issues internationally.

The next HRAFF is planned for first quarter 2010.

This is a volunteer role, however a highly rewarding one. The successful applicant will gain invaluable practical experience, as well as making many industry connections.

Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed in Melbourne in July. Applicants must be based in Melbourne and be available at the very least two days per week during business hours. “Harraga” is a well-known expression used in Northern Africa to describe those who undertake the decades old, life endangering, illegal crossing from North Africa to Europe seeking refuge, asylum and economic opportunity. At any given time a large number of harraga wait in North African ports to make the crossing to Europe, while those who cross the Mediterranean circulate in Europe with various types of official status, often sans papiers or ‘undocumented’. In 2008, in an attempt to break through the mass media’s representation of this human phenomenon as a ‘faceless’, ‘endless stream’ of masses illegally forcing their way into Europe, two Viennese anthropology students, Annika Lems and Christine Moderbacher, set off with minimum resources to trace the phenomenon of harraga to its human origins.

The result is a one-hour documentary focusing on the lives of two Tunisians, Khalid and Ghabsi. The documentary explores why these two young men, like so many others, made the decision to risk their lives in an illegal crossing by boat and documents the struggle to create a new life in the EU. The film also presents the EU’s approach to asylum and immigration, and the human rights situation in Tunisia, through interviews with experts from Tunisia, Italy and Austria. The images of the film seamlessly move between Tunisia and Italy, highlighting the fragile nature of the concept of “Fortress Europe” and showing how the EU’s repressive asylum and immigration policies have failed to quench the desire of the harraga to continue to seek refuge and opportunity across the sea.

Hi my name is Andrew Brown, I wanted to let people know that i'm out here and available to help out on documentary projects. I'm trained in Final cut and Avid, and pro tools, and many aspects of video production at university in England. I have just litterally just finished a study-abroad semester here at RMIT, where I studied Documentary studies, Cinema studies, Video production and Moving image technology (video art). The next project i'm involved in is a film which is being screened at MIFF on the final day of the festival in August. We are currently location scouting and finishing the script, but I have some time while we prepare so If anyone needs help on their projects, such as editing, sound, or just someone to help with logistics in production, I love being around documentary, so I would love to help out!

In 2010 the Victorian Australian Directors Guild will present a series of events for directors addressing the theme of:

I Did it My Way – Navigating Success in a Changing Landscape.
EVENT 1 – CREATING DOCUMENTARY MY WAY – GUEST DIRECTORS LUCY PAPLINSKA, CHARLOTTE ROSEBY AND RHIAN SKIRVING

The first ADG event will present three documentary directors discussing their passion and belief in maintaining the integrity of their projects and their innovative solutions to funding and delivering them.

ALONE IN A CROWDED ROOM explores the line between ability and disability and takes us beyond our preconceptions of one of the most mysterious and challenging disorders of our time, autism. Writer/Director Lucy Paplinska filmed the documentary following four adults with autism over four years.

IN THE END is a documentary that gently follows the journey of patients, their families and the doctor working on the frontline of a modern-day medical dilemma of our own making. Director Charlotte Roseby’s closely observed work tells of how old people used to die at home. Now they are ending up in intensive care, hardwired to machines, surrounded by strangers.

ROCK N ROLL NERD is an intimate tale that charts the rise of one of Australia’s most unique young talents from obscurity to celebrity. Filmed over three years, Director Rhian Skirving captures Tim Minchin’s first frenzied break onto the comedy scene, in a highly charged personal journey of love and ambition.

The AUSTRALIAN DIRECTORS GUILD is an industry association representing the interests of film, television and digital media directors, documentary makers, animators, assistant directors and independent producers throughout Australia.

Some news about a couple of screenings at the HRAFF

One is a screening guest programmed by filmmaker Steve Thomas. He'll be screening his film Black Man's Houses along with a film by Danish filmmaker Peter Elsass called The Journey Back, afterwards he'll be speaking about issues of representation in documentary and his personal experiences. This is on Sun May 2 at 12.30pm at Nova.

The other is an industry forum 'On a Shoestring- Creative Resourcefulness In Documentary Filmmaking' featuring Jeff Daniels and Robyn Hughan. This is at the Nova on 1 May at 4pm.

Good morning crew,
Thanks to everyone who made it down to 10 x 10 in April to help Doco3000 celebrate its first birthday and see some great projects. It was a great night and our biggest yet! Thanks to our 3 screeners and we apologies to everyone for the sound quality - there was a different set up with Comedy Festival happening and we promise we'll be back to good next month!

Tez and Tones take Tasmania

The story follows two actors travelling around Tasmania, sharing a double swag and driving a yellow VW called Lola as they attempt to "live off their art". They have no money, no food, no show and pretty much no talent but over eight days (including Christmas) they learn new skills, go to beautiful places and feast on the kindness of strangers but they also experience hunger, sometimes they are forced to sleep at the side of the road and occasionally they get run out of town.

Camera person and Sound recordist wanted: April 22, Melbourne

A filmmaker from the US, Joan Sekler has contacted us looking for a camera person and sound recordist for his upcoming Melbourne shoot.

I am a documentary filmmaker based in Santa Monica, California and I am producing a documentary about how miners, over the years, have been exploited by Rio Tinto, a multinational corporation which owns mines around the world, and has used violence against miners and their unions, in their quest for greater profits. In particular, there is a mine in a desert town of Boron, California where the workers are in a locked battle against Rio Tinto, in order to save their jobs.

There has been international support for them around the world because this is a David and Goliath struggle where 560 miners are facing off against a giant, global corporation. Next month, there will be an annual shareholders meeting in Melbourne on Thursday, April 22nd. I need a cameraperson along with a person holding a boom mic to shoot the protest, my standup interviews with the protesters, etc.

There will be proxy shareholders who can go to the meeting and will try to speak at the microphone against Rio Tinto's anti-labor tactics and I'm giving one of them a hidden camera. Once they come out of the meeting, I need to interview them.

The Sony EX-1 HD videocamera together with a wide angle lens, plus a boom mic is what is being used for my documentary in the U.S. This camera can be switched to NTSC which is what I need. I will be bringing a portable hard drive and my MacBook Pro laptop to transfer the footage.

This is a paid gig, but it would have to be on the low end, since I am paying for this documentary right now out of pocket. Once I produce a trailer and website back in Santa Monica, I can begin to fundraise.

By the way, my last documentary, "Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election" aired on SBS back in 2003-2004.

March 10 x 10 was a great night, with lots of familiar and new faces filling up the room. 3 filmmakers screened their projects and received lots of feedback from our vocal audience. Thanks to Claire Jager from Screen Australia who came to talk about this years AIDC (Australian International Documentary Conference) held in Adelaide in February.

April 10 x 10 will be held on MONDAY April 12 (not our usual Tuesday night) so please note that change.

Steve Thomas, former head of Documentary at VCA is teaching documentary script writing at Open Channel in March. The course description is as follows:As the SBS tagline touted: “the world really is an amazing place”.

Develop your ideas for a compelling documentary project with a thorough exploration of... the craft of documentary scriptwriting. From research to interviews, treatments to scripts, the course explores the challenges of writing compelling stories for the documentary genre. Practical group sessions in developing concepts and constructive feedback on written treatments will push you towards a strong, well thought-out project.

Hi everyone, my name's Ash; I'm a freelance journalist (specialisingin true life stories) from the UK and recently moved to Melbourne. Imade a short documentary last year, absolutely loved the wholeprocess, and am now looking for a Research/Production Assistant rolein the field. I’ve been doing some film-related work since coming to Melbourne including: scriptwriting and story development for a charity who aremaking a film on cyber bullying and youth culture; concept developmentfor a 50 minute documentary that a production company here is workingon; and volunteering with the Gertrude Street Projection Festival to film in the run up to and during the festival. Pitching is a major part of getting any project financed and screened. This weekend workshop, with on-line components, includes the theory and practice of pitching to assist participants in perfecting their pitch for a documentary project.
Participants will examine the best ways of presenting a written and verbal pitch and preparing a pitch tape. They will also write and present their own pitch to a guest panel and submit a written pitch on-line for assessment after the weekend. Guest speakers will include independent documentary producers and industry representatives.

Open Channel, supported by Screen Australia and located in the Docklands, provides a one stop shop for documentary filmmakers including professional development, production support, events and equipment hire.

From March 2, 2010 Open Channel also has a full time 3 month course running in the art of Documentary filmmaking. During this 12 week course, make your own short 5 minute Documentary for festival competition, and for broadcast on C31. Certificate III in Media - Documentary Production comprises intensive, hands-on training with a focus on the documentary genre. Aimed at entry-level practitioners, the program introduces students to industry standards while encouraging practical learning experiences. Combining visceral imagery with highly personal stories, Amiel Courtin-Wilson’s unique directorial style has evolved from working in documentary and drama over the last thirteen years. Amiel’s exceptional feature documentary Bastardy continues to screen Internationally, after premiering at MIFF in 2008. Visit the site here
His short CICADA screened in the prestigious Director’s Fortnight program in the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and Amiel is currently financing his first dramatic feature film HAIL and editing his next feature length documentary CATCH MY DISEASE about renowned Australian pop singer Ben Lee.

"Since my first feature documentary Chasing Buddha I have developed a fascination with how people maintain a sense of hope in the face of adversity and how they manage to transform themselves for the better when faced with crushing circumstances. Again and again I seem to gravitate towards people who have always felt innately different to the rest of society. In Jack Charles’ (Bastardy) case I was awestruck by his ability to maintain a reputable career in acting while also living in the throes of a seemingly unbreakable cycle of crime and incarceration."

Filmmaker Jeff Daniels worked for over 10 years in New York, Los Angeles and Australia as a researcher and in post production on a number of dramatic and documentary projects and features.

His most recent film The 10 Conditions of Love attracted attention worldwide after premiering at MIFF in 2009. On the night of the screening, with a strong police presence, 1700 people lined up around two blocks to see the film and Q and A session. The screening ended with a standing ovation as international press hovered over the films subject Rebiya Kadeer and Director Jeff Daniels and Producers John Lewis and Dennis Smith.

FRAMED 07: 10 Conditions of Love or How a small film became a VERY BIG deal

Melbourne documentary filmmaker Jeff Daniels' independent film The 10 Conditions of Love is the most controversial film of 2009. It tells the story of Rebiya Kadeer, the exiled leader of the predominatly muslim Uyghur people in the far western deserts of China and her struggle for autonomous rule. Labelled a terrorist by the Chinese government, she has been twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Its selection at festivals in Melbourne, New Zealand and Taiwan this year sparked an international news feeding frenzy following Chinese government demands for the film to be pulled from the festivals and subsequent internet hacking attempts traced to mainland China. At MIFF, the film played to an audience of more than 1,000 at a special Q&A screening with Daniels and Kadeer which was was the lead news item that night, before it embarked on a recently concluded season at Cinema Nova. Not bad for a 53-minute doco made on a shoestring budget.

However, the film is also a labour of love for Daniels, who first heard about the Uyghur and Kadeer over a beer with a friend in Beijing seven years ago and set about researching and then shooting the film which has created such a stir around the world.

Join Jeff Daniels and Open Channel's Marc Gracie as they discuss the origins of the film and the many steps it has travelled to this day. This session is invaluable for documentary filmmakers and those looking to get into the craft.

We had a great night in September at Glitch with two great projects, and a keen audience.

First up was Poppy Shmith and Peter George with their film, YAKking.

YAKking is an educational resource/documentary commissioned by Family Planning Victoria, in collaboration with their young gay support group YAK. As the YAK members interview representatives of queer venues and institutions, they explore where to go in Melbourne if you're young and same-sex attracted, bisexual or just curious. Extensive discussions with the YAKers themselves about sexuality, identity and belonging provide a closer look into the lives and minds of Queer youth.

Then Craig Boord screened Little Ripper.

Pigeon Fanciers train their birds to fly home, it's a tough competition and highly competitive. This passion for pigeons takes over peoples lives, no holidays, no backyard, full dedication, it's all about the birds. Little Ripper is a story about Pigeon racers in Australia. Their sport is dying, but their love for their birds is strong. This short interesting documentary explains the sport through talking to the Men and Women behind the birds.

September’s 10 x 10 is taking place on Wednesday 9^th at 7pm.

Now that MIFF is over and everyone is keen to start on that idea they’ve had for ages, or pick up those tapes they shot a few years ago, 10 x 10 is the perfect place to screen some of your work in progress and get some constructive feedback.

Welcome to Winter!

July’s 10 x 10 warmed the cold that’s settled over Melbourne these last few weeks with two great projects being screened.

We are now looking for people to screen at August’s 10 x 10 on WEDNESDAY 5^th AUGUST at 7PM. If you would like to screen something, or know someone who wants some great feedback from people in the film making business and people in the film watching business, get in touch!

June’s screening profiled 2 great projects from Kai Raisbeck, and Pia Niebel and James Fleming

Kai Raisbeck kicked the evening off with PARRIWANTI - great intimate look into aboriginal youth and one of the most creative dance sequences and filming we’ve seen!

Parriwanti (Boys) is a film about what five young boys enjoy in their lives in a remote community six hours east of Broome, Western Australia. The boys tell stories about their relationship to the land and the things that they do when they are not at school.

Returning with LITTLE MOUNTAINS, Pia Niebel and James Fleming showed developments with their touching story of Sierra

Two and a half year-old Sierra has severe cerebral palsy and may never walk or talk, although her intellect is not affected by the disorder. Undeterred by the risks or the financial challenges, Sierra’s parents, Karen and Shane, are fighting to raise $20,000 to get Sierra controversial stem cell treatment and physiotherapy in Europe. A film about hope and fighting for the one you love, Little Mountains intimately portrays the Hill family’s extraordinary approach to dealing with Sierra’s condition, their journey to the high tech private clinics of Europe and the bio politics of emerging stem cell technologies.

June 10 x 10 - zimbabwe, drag queens and jews with guns

June’s 10 x 10 saw another great vocal and curious crowd pack into Glitch Cinema and Bar for 3 great projects that are in various stages of development.

We are now looking for people to screen at July’s 10 x 10 on WEDNESDAY 8^th July at 7PM. If you would like to screen something, or know someone who wants some great feedback from people in the film making business and people in the film watching business, get in touch!

June’s 10 x 10 saw three filmmakers screening their projects - Dominik Vukovic, Linette Etheredge and Jeff Daniel

First up was Domonik Vukovic with stories from his time in Zimbabwe

In March 2008 Dominik travelled to Zimbabwe to film and report on the country’s historic elections for International News channel France 24. Defining Moments in a Period of Change is a collection of clips that capture some of the critical moments during this time of hope, fear and struggle. The footage takes the viewer through a charged mass political rally for Morgan Tsvangirai then provides a glimpse into the lives of those at the centre of the struggle. Second was Linette Etheredge with DRAG’S ALLOWED

Amanda dreams of winning acceptance for her art. There’s only one thing standing in her way...she’s a drag queen.

Drag’s Allowed, is a journey into the private thoughts and fears of Amanda Monroe, a transgender male to female Drag Queen. Her quiet and sensitive inner world is punctuated by the glitzy and glamourous life she leads on stage as a member of the talented and tightly knit Drag troupe known as Drags Aloud. With footage taken over a ten year period Amanda’s sadness, uncertainty and determination to find inner peace will resonate with a broad mainstream audience. Her story reminds us of the universal quest for self acceptance and highlights the complexities inherent in being trans-gendered.

And finally was Jeff Daniel’s footage from initial interviews with Ari Rubin in FOR EVERY JEW A .22

In 1968 pamphlets were being handed out in Brooklyn with the slogan “For every Jew a .22.” They were printed by an organization of Jews called the Jewish Defense League who advocated armed insurgency to prevent another Holocaust. What followed were bombings and assassinations making the JDL one of America’s most active terrorist groups. Today 27 year old Ari Rubin carries the torch for the JDL after the murder of his imprisoned father and former leader. Perceiving a growing threat to Jews around the world after recent Israeli attacks on Gaza, will Ari continue the JDL’s cycle of violence?

May 10 x 10 - artists, houses and bouncers

Melbourne's second 10 x 10 was almost a full house! We had a great turn out as word got out about 10 x 10. We had 4 great projects from 4 young film makers. June's 10 x 10 is happening on THURSDAY 4^TH JUNE at 7PM. Here's what screened in May.....

First up was Evan Clarry with THE HOUSE I GREW UP IN.

The project is a personal documentary about the connection between generations through the places we inhabit; how these connections are lost and found again. Several years ago I took my father back to the ruins of the house he built for his family. He sold it to developers after his marriage disintegrated. When we arrived, it was vandalized and had recently been used as a squat for junkies. I had a video camera with me to record his reaction. Recently, after my father died, I journeyed back to the first house I ever lived in, and found it also abandoned, run down and forgotten. I was desperate to find something of my life there as a small child. And miraculously I found it.

Following on was Shufang Zhao with AUSTRALIAN SPIRIT, CHINESE HEART

Di Xiong Yao is an artist born to Russian and Chinese parents living through the Chinese Cultural Revolution and migrating to Australia as a refugee in 1981.

Over 20 years, Di Xiong combined western and Chinese painting traditions to complete two masterpieces. The 63 meter-long mural, Two Hundred Kangaroos depicts the famous Australian landscapes, flora and fauna with kangaroos frolicking. The 100 meter-long mural, Soul of Australia, is an epic paean of how the aborigines lived in harmony with nature prior to European settlement. This documentary shows the artist’s talent with the unusual and moving story behind the way that he paints and the topics he chooses.

The documentary also reflects on identity and biculturalism and the value of artistic experimentation. Di Xiong travels back to his homeland rekindling his passion for traditional horse painting, bringing new kinds of cultural fusion - between East and West, modern and traditional.

After a drinks break, Tom Vogul totally changed the pace with BOUNCER

A rare insight into the world of crowd controllers. Seven bouncers are interviewed and give a rare insight into a dangerous profession.

Note: BOUNCER will be screening as part of the St Kilda Film Festival on the 30th May in Session 12 at 10.30pm at the The Palace George Cinemas in St Kilda.

BOUNCER will also be screening as part of the DUNGONG Film Festival.

And back by popular demand (and due to a late cancellation!) was Ocea Sellar and James Fleming with a fresh trailer of HERE

'Here' is a documentary about artist Jeff Doring and the connection we all feel to place. Jeff's work has been shown in the Tate Modern and New York’s Museum of Modern Art. His groundbreaking ethnographic film Tidikawa and Friends has been screened at Cannes Film Festival and his beautiful and faithfully recorded ethnographic recordings helped the Ngarinyin people of the Kimberley win native title. Yet Jeff Doring is little known in Australia and perhaps he likes it that way. He lives alone, deep in the bush beyond the reach of the power and telephone lines. But Jeff is nearly 70 years old and suffered a massive blow when bushfire obliterated his land and his home, destroying decades of art work. The works that haven’t been lost sit in tents on his property gathering dust. Through campfire and hilltop conversations on his picturesque property, Filmmakers James Fleming and Ocea Sellar reveal a remarkable and intriguing man, his work and connection to land.

Next 10 x 10 Wednesday MAY 13th 2009

10x10 is a free project development workshop. Filmmakers can screen up to ten minutes of their non-fiction works-in-progress and receive ten minutes of directed feedback in a supportive environment. It's a great opportunity to see some fantastic work, and also to be a part of the Melbourne independent film community.

Formulated by the US resource group DOCULINK, www.doculink.org, the 10 x 10 formula has now hit Melbourne. Genevieve Bailey and Benj Binks are hosting this new event in conjunction with the Melbourne Documentary Group / ADG (Australian Directors Guild)

This '10 x 10' format has been a very successful and useful for documentary practitioners in a variety of cities around the world; why not here?

10 x 10 May is happening at 7PM on WEDNESDAY 13TH MAY at Glitch Bar and Cinema, 318 St. Georges Rd, North Fitzroy.

Everyone is welcome to continue to discuss the films and chat at the bar afterwards.

Melbourne's first 10 x 10 was a huge success. Three very different projects were on show to a vocal audience. A big thanks to our filmmakers in week 1 for diving in and putting their work on show. We are glad you found the process helpful!

Second was Benj Binks with MONGOLIAN BLING.

Mongolia has hip hop. It was beamed into the country, bringing with it foreign images of jewels, clothes, and fame. Having been closed for so long under Socialism and eagerly looking to the west for something to relate to, hip hop soon spread across the country. But in their haste to take in the outside world, many youth ignored their countries own rich musical history. A history that the Shamans believe holds the key to Mongolia's success on the world hip hop stage. Now, some bands are starting to delve within their culture to create true Mongolian hip hop.
